THE WOMEN OF ISLAM- AMEER TAAWUN

#officeoftheameertaawun

Since the birth of this Ummah, we have had countless of men and women who had come, lived and died. Some were privileged to live with something to say after them (as a result of the contribution made towards Islamic development) while some lived without any traces.

Today, as our generation continues to live in a society similar to the Jahiliyah period, where Muslim women were not respected, protected, or honoured and much is expected of them than being a mother, then we continue to ask of those among our Muslim women who are ready to write their names in the book of history for this generation and the ones to come?

During the lives of the early Muslim women, it was learnt that their motherhood did not restrict them from being actively involved in social services, upholding a social morality and societal balance as well as nurturing, guidance and reformation of the subsequent generation of men and women.

It has been showing through the history of Islam that a woman was among the first to be martyred upholding Islam. It was reported by Al-Bukhari that women used to participate in the battle with the Prophet of Allah. They gave water to the fighters, served them, and returned the dead and wounded to Medina.

Also, Muslim, Ibn Majah and Ahmed (in their narrations) said that Umm Ateyya, the Ansari , said: 'I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) seven times, guarding the camp, making the food, treating the wounded and caring for the sick'.

In his Sahih, Muslim reported Umm Sulaim, the wife of Abi Talha, as saying that she carried a dagger on the day of the battle, of Hunain. When the Prophet (S.A.W) asked her about it she said, 'I carry it so that I can defend myself against the enemies.

All these women came, lived their lives for Islam and honoured in the book of Islamic history as a result of their contributions. Are our women strong enough to uphold this task? Although we are not at war and we are not even asking for it, but looking at their type, their zeal for Islam and their motherhood, can we compare this present generation of Muslim women with them? Definitely, they are not the same. Then, what types of Muslim women are our generation producing and what type of families are we trying to establish?
